It seems that with each season, I discover a new sporting obsession. I thought my new summer obsession was tennis, but I have to say, it might be kayaking!
I kayaked once while vacationing in Jamaica and if I think about it, I'm not sure I truly enjoyed it. It was fun, but kayaking through the ocean was a little unnerving. You see, I get a little stressed out in the ocean knowing that there are tons of fish swimming around my feet.
This weekends experience was much more pleasurable... something I didn't expect. We took a trip to Spruce Run
, a beautiful State Park in Hunterdon County. You pay $10 to drive through the gate, pull up to the edge of a beautiful lake and simply enjoy the day. Lucky for us, we were with family who own their own sail boat and kayaks.
My six your old, in usual "Ryan" fashion, was first in line to kayak. He called dibs by hoping into one of two kayaks that weren't yet in the water. It was a blast to watch him cruise through the lake. You could see how much fun he truly had and I was amazed by his stamina. This kid kayaked the entire lake and I wasn't sure the rest of us were going to get a turn. I don't really blame him because once all the kids had time to enjoy their new found freedom on the water, I got a chance to try it out.
I have to tell you, there is truly nothing more relaxing than floating in the middle of a lake, listening to the water splash up around the base of your boat, looking out at the horizon and watching sail boats drift by. Total Zen.
Total Zen and an excellent low-impact workout! Yes, I know, I've been accused many times of turning every activity into a workout, but to me every activity is an opportunity to work your body. Before I had a chance to truly get into a "zen moment," I had to kayak back and forth on the lake, counting my strokes (reps). I felt great knowing I was getting a great upper body workout, really focusing on my shoulders, back and abs. Once I got that out of my system (when my shoulders cramped), I sat back and really enjoyed just being on the water. It was so peaceful. James
So like all new discoveries, I'm 110% into this sport, scouring Craigslist for used Kayaks. The one problem we'll have to solve..... one boat, five obsessed family members. Who gets the first ride?
